Crown SX724 — Just serviced by Chuck Ziska (9/2026), invoice in photos.
If you're looking at vintage Crowns, you know who Chuck Ziska is. This SX724 (s/n 12849) came back from his shop last week. SX electronics fully recapped, new play-level pots and output controls, all switches cleaned, power supply and meters calibrated, then mated to this 700-series transport with a complete record/play EQ. Invoice is in the photos.
As you’ll see from the invoice, I sent Chuck two Crowns, an 800 transport with SX electronics and this 700 transport with CX electronics, and had him swap the electronics. I'm keeping the CX800. This is the 700 transport with the recapped, recalibrated SX electronics from the 800 machine; the invoice heading carries the other machine's serial, and this one is referenced in the body.
Nearly every other Crown listed online that I can find is as-is and unrestored. A 55-year-old Crown that hasn't been recapped is a project. Add shipping to and from a tech plus the restoration bill and you're well past my price — this one is done and ready to record. At my price point, I’m already underwater, but I would rather lose a little bit of money than sell a headache online. I’ve bought enough of those over the years to avoid the karma of passing one on.
Quarter-track stereo, 3¾/7½/15 ips, heads in good shape. Faint hairline scratch on the faceplate (pictured), otherwise clean.
Shipping: Heavy decks get wrecked by bad packing. I use Chuck's exact method and similar materials — see the photos of how this one arrived. I didn’t bother to remove all of the fiddly packing for photos because in the scheme of things, you’d rather have it arrive to you the way that Chuck packed it. $150 flat, insured, lower 48. Ships within 1–2 days of payment. I’ll be away ~2 weeks starting late October; purchases during that window ship on my return. I will post when I’m on vacation, so until then I’m available here to ship right away.
More Crown and Ampex machines coming in the next few weeks.
