A square-shoulder acoustic-electric guitar engineered to deliver balanced acoustic resonance, high-headroom projection, and integrated stage amplification.
First introduced in 1960 as Gibson's inaugural square-shoulder dreadnought, the Hummingbird was designed to provide a smooth, blended acoustic backing for vocalists while retaining enough low-end depth and mid-range clarity to cut through ensemble mixes. The 2008 Standard model maintains this historical architectural framework, produced out of Gibson's Bozeman, Montana facility using traditional luthiery methods.
Built with a solid Sitka spruce top paired with solid mahogany back and sides, the guitar utilizes hand-scalloped traditional X-bracing secured with hide glue to optimize soundboard resonance. The mahogany neck features a 24.75" scale length, a comfortable round profile, and a rosewood fingerboard appointed with mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays and a bone nut. Under-saddle transduction is handled by an onboard L.R. Baggs Element pickup system with a soundhole-mounted volume control, delivering uncoloured signal conversion for live performance and direct recording applications.
Tonewood Architecture & Construction
-
Solid Sitka Spruce Soundboard: Delivers wide dynamic range, crisp articulation, and high structural headroom suitable for flatpicking and strumming.
-
Solid Mahogany Back & Sides: Provides focused mid-range presence and dry acoustic projection with minimal unwanted overtones.
-
Hand-Scalloped X-Bracing: Enhances top flexibility and low-frequency resonance while maintaining long-term soundboard stability.
-
Compound Dovetail Neck Joint: Secured at the 14th fret using traditional hot hide glue to maximize string energy transmission to the body cavity.
Acoustic Hardware & Electronics
-
L.R. Baggs Element System: Utilizes a flexible under-saddle transducer to mirror soundboard movement, minimizing acoustic quack during amplified playback.
-
Traditional Belly-Up Rosewood Bridge: Fitted with a compensated bone saddle to maintain precise intonation and efficient mechanical string coupling.
-
Grover Rotomatic Tuning Machines: Feature a nickel finish and an 18:1 gear ratio to provide fine pitch adjustment and stable tension hold.
