This is the sound of nostalgia. Generation Loss captures every aspect of tape degradation, using a combination of effects to nail that specific sound we all recognize. "Generation Loss" refers to the drop in audio quality and the introduction of noise and artifacts that occur whenever a copy is made on magnetic media, such as tape. Random pitch fluctuations, bandwidth-limiting filters, reduced sample rates, and noise are all packed into this pedal to replicate that signature sound—without the need for a faulty VHS player.
One of the most sought-after effects pedals is finally making a comeback: meet the Generation Loss V2 from Cooper FX. Renowned for its nostalgia-inducing qualities, the pedal is designed to recreate the characterful degradation associated with repeatedly transferring audio onto magnetic tape.
The pedal features a range of controls to help you dial in the perfect lo-fi sound. WOW governs the depth and speed of slow, random pitch fluctuations, while FLUTTER shapes the tone by intensifying rapid, random pitch shifts—mimicking the behavior of real tape. The sound is further sculpted by resonant low-pass and high-pass filter controls (LP and HP). To push the lo-fi effect even further, the pedal includes GEN and NOISE parameter controls. Turning the GEN knob counter-clockwise reduces the sample rate, while the NOISE control comes in two flavors: turning it counter-clockwise adds white noise before the filter, whereas turning it clockwise introduces a different noise character based on the original Generation Loss pedal. No noise is added when the knob is in the center position. The balance between the dry and wet signals is adjusted via two dedicated potentiometers, allowing for precise control over the mix.
The story doesn't end there, however, as the Generation Loss V2 has even more tricks up its sleeve. The pedal features two footswitches: one to engage and disengage the effect, and an AUX switch that can be configured to perform one of three creative functions. Using the FUNC knob above it, the AUX switch can trigger Tape Stop, Garbled Tape, or Spectral Freeze/Drone effects. Furthermore, both footswitches can operate in either latching or momentary modes—extremely useful for live performance. Finally, the Generation Loss V2 supports up to three presets, easily saved and recalled via the PRESET button above the Bypass switch, with access to even more presets via MIDI.
If you’ve been looking to capture the distinctive, beautiful, and bizarre lo-fi tones of the Cooper FX Generation Loss, your search might be over—the Gen Loss V2 is ready to degrade any sound you create.
