Vintage Ibanez DCL Digital Stereo Chorus, Made in Japan during the mid-1980s.

The DCL comes from Ibanez's short-lived Master Series era and is one of the company's early digital chorus pedals. Produced around 1985–1986, it has a very distinctive sound that sits somewhere between the lush modulation people expect from an '80s chorus and the cleaner, more precise character of early digital processing.

What makes the DCL especially interesting is the amount of control it gives you.

Along with Speed and Width, there is a continuously variable Delay Time control and an Effect Level control. That Delay Time knob is a big part of the fun—you can move from a smooth, spacious chorus into brighter, more unusual textures that can almost take on a metallic or pseudo-Leslie character.

At subtle settings it works beautifully for clean guitar, giving chords a wider stereo image without becoming overly obvious. Push the Width and Delay Time further and it becomes much more unmistakably '80s: bright, dimensional and slightly futuristic in the best possible way.

The stereo outputs are where the DCL really comes alive. Running it into two amps or a stereo recording setup creates a much broader sense of movement than you get from a typical mono chorus.

This is not simply another vintage analog chorus. The early digital character is exactly what makes the DCL interesting, and its unusual control layout gives it considerably more personality than many chorus pedals from the same period.

A great piece for players who enjoy vintage Japanese modulation pedals, early digital effects, or anyone chasing that clean and spacious mid-'80s chorus sound.
