Who It's For

If you're looking for a straightforward two-channel receiver from a company that took audio reproduction very seriously, this Nakamichi RE-2 deserves a look.

I've been around audio equipment for a long time. Earlier in my career I managed a Tech Hi-Fi store here in New England and sold and used a lot of quality audio gear. Nakamichi was one of those names that always carried a little more weight with audio people. They weren't trying to compete simply by putting more buttons and bigger wattage numbers on the front panel. The company's reputation was built on engineering, sound quality and some truly exceptional audio products.

That's part of the reason I enjoyed getting this RE-2 cleaned up, tested and ready for its next owner.

First Impressions

The RE-2 comes from that wonderful period when Nakamichi's understated black cosmetics made the equipment look almost industrial.

No fake wood. No giant graphics. No unnecessary flash.

Just that distinctive Nakamichi black face, gold lettering, red/orange display and a surprisingly sophisticated amplifier underneath.

And yes — the original Nakamichi multifunction remote is included and working.

That's an important part of this package. The remote isn't simply a volume up/down accessory; it provides control of multiple receiver functions, including source and speaker-related functions. How It Operates

I've gone through this receiver and tested its functions, inputs, controls and remote.

Everything I've tested is operating properly.

Controls operate as they should, the tuner and inputs are working, both channels are working properly, and the multifunction remote is working.

One feature I particularly appreciate is the MM phono input. If you're putting together a proper two-channel system around a turntable, you don't need to add an external phono preamp.

How It Sounds

This is where the Nakamichi heritage matters.

The RE-2 is rated at a legitimate 55 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz, with both channels driven at no more than 0.1% THD. Dynamic output is rated at 75 watts into 8 ohms and 95 watts into 4 ohms, with a specified 14-amp peak current capability. Manuals+

More interesting than the wattage number is Nakamichi's Harmonic Time Alignment amplifier circuitry. Nakamichi described the RE-2 design as using an advanced wideband, low open-loop-gain topology. Hi-Fi Engine

That's the kind of engineering that made Nakamichi equipment a step above the ordinary mass-market receiver for many audio enthusiasts.

To my ears, this is exactly what a good two-channel receiver should be: clean, controlled and musical without needing a lot of gimmicks.

Condition

This is a vintage component and shows normal signs of previous ownership and age.

I've carefully cleaned it while preserving the original black finish, lettering and controls. Please study my photographs closely — I deliberately photograph my equipment in enough detail to show what you're actually buying.

The display presents nicely, the controls and lettering remain attractive, and overall this is a very presentable example.

Serial Number: D12011421

I believe the RE-2 dates from the early-to-mid 1990s. I have not found reliable Nakamichi documentation that allows me to assign an exact manufacturing year from this serial number, so I'm not going to invent one.
