D19 THE CLASSIC BROADCAST DYNAMIC

The AKG D19 shaped countless European broadcast and recording productions. This TELEFUNKEN example has undergone a complete rebuild, with particular attention given to preserving the original construction and acoustic principle of the microphone.

The original capsule assembly has been retained and rebuilt around a new, non-original diaphragm, returning the microphone to full working condition while keeping as much of the historical assembly as possible.

OPTICAL CONDITION — B

Good vintage condition.

The body shows scratches and normal signs of use. The small head screws are missing. The original grille and overall construction remain well preserved.

The D19 BK was originally the fixed-cable version of the D19. On this example, the cable termination has been replaced by a small 3-pin Tuchel connection to add even more class

BUILD & DESIGN

The D19 conceals a remarkably sophisticated acoustic system.

Particularly interesting is the mechanical bass filter incorporated into the capsule assembly. The photographs show the filter in different positions and expose the long acoustic path behind the diaphragm. Rather than electronically filtering the signal, the system changes the acoustic loading of the capsule itself.

The complete original capsule structure was preserved during the rebuild. Only the diaphragm was replaced.

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

Open and articulate, with the recognizable forward upper-mid presence associated with the D19 family.

The rebuilt capsule produces a clean output with the immediacy that makes the D19 particularly effective on speech, vocals, acoustic instruments and percussion.

It remains especially compelling as a close microphone on snare and drums, where its controlled low end and pronounced articulation allow it to sit immediately in a recording.

A new diaphragm was fitted allowing the historical system to function again - the result is a microphone that behaves very similar to original D19 microphones - that just like this one- were assembled by hand.
