1966 Martin 000-28...these don't come up very often, primarily because they were a relatively low production guitar. During the post war years (50s/60s) Martin made roughly one 000-28 for every 10 D-28s they produced. This example is in excellent condition cosmetically and functionally but with an interesting repair history. When I first acquired this guitar (about 25 years ago) the lower bout of the treble side had suffered a significant impact crack. The top and back were undamaged but the finish on the entire body had significant play and handling wear at that time. The guitar was sent to David Nichols at Custom Pearl Inlay in Malone, NY (a former Martin employee) who removed the back, repaired the side and reinstalled the back. I then sent the body to Dale Bartholomew in Easton, PA, who was retired from the finishing department at CF Martin to have the body refinished. There was no sanding of the top, back or sides done during the refin. The side repair is under the new finish and is very difficult to detect, and does not 'telegraph' through the new finish (which is over 20 years old now). I've photographed the area, showing it in two pics in this listing, one with flash to penetrate the finish so you can see the repair on the wood surface and another without the flash in natural light so you can see the finish surface.
The Brazilian rosewood back and sides of the guitar are superb quality, as is the top. Other than the repair that I've described, the guitar is free from cracks or damage and the 20+ year old lacquer finish shows virtually no wear, just a few very light scratches on the back here and there. The neck was reset back when the refinish was done and the angle remains perfect. The guitar was refretted recently and the neck is straight under tension. The neck shows a little more finish wear than the body as the neck finish is original. The tuners are period Grover Rotomatics. The guitar plays easily with the action set at 5/64" at the high E and 6/64" at the low E with plenty of saddle showing. Intonation is good all over the neck. The guitar has crisp, woody tone and good projection/volume. Best played fingerstyle but does well with a medium flat pick attack as well. Sound file available on request. Comes with a modern 5-ply hard case. Ships to US addresses only, no international shipping offered. Note that the shipping rate is set to get the guitar from the east coast (where I am) to the west coast. If you would like a shipping quote to your location, please message me with your town and zip code and I'll send you a rate to your address so you don't overpay. Thanks for your interest.
