Here is a classic Tascam 244 Portastudio.

We performed an in-house servicing of this unit. The standard run through included both belts, new idler tires, and a new pinch roller.

Once these things were completed, we began testing. All of the buttons began to sink through their holes in the faceplate. The plastic is really quite brittle. What we’ve been able to test has proven mostly successful-

-All four channels do play and make sound as they should. No matter what we try, the unit will not record to tape, even when armed. The physical button under the record plastic does not seem to operate as it should, and because of that we do not know the condition of the record head

-Tapes rewind, fast forward, play, pause, and stop as they should even though some of their designated plastic buttons have collapsed into the machine. They seem to be staying put, but if we do ship the machine there is a very good chance they will move around inside the unit

-Two screws were missing from the back panel prior to our servicing

It should not take much to get this unit going. We do not perform any work on these units aside from the basic transport belts/tires/roller. We have not done anything outside of the transport, and the unit seemed otherwise solid inside with some dust that we did vacuum out. We cannot attest to the condition under the faceplate. It is definitely likely someone was in this unit prior to our service.
