Fender MJT Baritone Custom Build

A true original, one of a kind.

I handmade this guitar after getting frustrated with the lack of options for buying baritones, especially in the Fender space. Short of a few models that really lean a lot more toward the heavier metal/doom scene there just isn't a lot out there, so I took matters into my own hands.

The body itself is an relic'd telecaster in gorgeous chequered Lake Placid blue as provided by the masters at MJT Aged guitars (). Perfectly worn edges give this instrument a true Fender Custom Shop look through and through. The black Cabronita style pickguard ties it all together.

The neck came from a Squier Classic Vibe baritone that I bought specifically for this project. While you might bemoan Squire as being somewhat 'less-than' beginner guitars I can assure you the Classic Vibe lineup is extremely well regarded, and that craftsmanship shows. I also wanted this exact neck because I'm convinced it's one of the slimmest 27" baritones in production right now. You can see it pictured on the left toward the end of the photo slideshow directly next to another baritone I built, but with Fenders MIM conversion neck. Note the pretty extreme difference in thickness.

Because of that, simply put this neck flies. Its super slim, with a modern 9.5" radius on a gorgeous Indian laurel fretboard. Coupled with two Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Mini Humbuckers the sound just cuts. Really crisp, clear tones which are often hard to replicate given the baritones lower register.

A single volume knob and three way switch keep things simple and streamlined.

I'd also like to point out that all of the set up work performed on this instrument was professionally done by legendary guitar tech and luthier Eric 'Chaz' Czechanski out of his shop inside the famed Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, California. Put frankly, I fully believe you will not play a better guitar than one set up by this man. He went through and completely dialed in every aspect of the instrument and set it up in standard baritone B to B tuning for me.

The best part is you can easily swap the neck back to a normal 25.5" scale length with no further bridge placement adjustment and play this boy boy in standard if you'd like.

If you love Fender tele's but are also a baritone enthusiast like I am I can confidently say you will not find many other options out there.
