From the Facebook Page “Olds Trumpets”. The Olds Super Recording trumpet is a legendary instrument crafted for the professional recording studio. Designed in collaboration with Harold "Pappy" Mitchell, a renowned studio trumpet player, it became highly sought after among top players of the era. Distinguishable by its forward-positioned valve section and offset second valve for ergonomic playability, this model featured innovative design elements inspired by early bell experiments from Olds. The Olds Super Recordings are very rare instruments. They combine the red brass alloy and the balanced action of the Recording with with pure raw tone quality of the Super to create a trumpet that has the best features of both.

This trumpet was bought new by my father in law Donald Moss. He graduated from Drake University with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 1947. We could not find the original receipt but I’m positive I saw one dated 1949 for $250. According to the Olds Central website the serial number places it being produced in late 1948. He played professionally and toured with Clyde McCoy. We have an undated photo of Donald with a trumpet with Clyde McCoy and his orchestra, a certificate showing his induction into the Alpha Beta Chapter of the Sinfonia Fraternity, and a portrait of him with the trumpet. These photos can be included if the buyer is interested. He stopped touring when he married in 1953 but still played locally near St Joseph, Missouri through the 1990’s. His daughter also played and used it in school through 1982 in band. It has been mostly retired for 25 years and stored in his, and then our non smoking homes. The photos show as much detail as I could capture, and there’s a short video showing how smooth all the slides work and the second one came off with an audible “pop” which apparently shows the compression is excellent. All three valves are stamped with the original serial number. The cork on the two spit valves has deteriorated, otherwise it is in excellent condition. The case is a newer Bach case and has some cleaning tools.
