The Legacy Collection is one of the most thoughtful things Taylor has done in its fifty-year history — not a reissue for nostalgia's sake, but a deliberate return to a tonewood pairing and bracing pattern that defined the Grand Auditorium's original voice when Bob Taylor introduced the body shape in 1994. The Legacy 714ce pairs a solid Western Red cedar top with solid Indian rosewood back and sides, voiced with the traditional X-bracing pattern used in the very first Grand Auditorium guitars rather than the V-Class bracing of the current standard lineup. The choice is intentional and meaningful. Cedar is more touch-sensitive and immediately responsive than spruce — warmer, with a bloom that happens closer to the surface of the note rather than building behind it — and against Indian rosewood's warmth and harmonic complexity, the result is a richly textured, deeply expressive acoustic voice with warm lows, clear trebles, and a sensitivity to dynamics that rewards nuanced playing. The LR Baggs Element VTC electronics translate that natural acoustic character to stage and studio with transparency and realism. The visual appointments reflect Bob Taylor's preference for understated elegance: black binding with black and white pinstripes, green abalone dot inlays in the West African Crelicam ebony fingerboard, a matching three-ring rosette, ebony bridge pins with green abalone dots, faux-tortoiseshell pickguard, gold tuning machines, gloss body with satin neck, and the Venetian cutaway that keeps the upper register accessible. Neo-tropical mahogany neck, 1-3/4 inch nut width, 25.5-inch scale, and 20 frets round out a guitar that is as considered in its construction as it is in its design.
