Ludwig 100th Anniversary Legacy Exotic Series (Lacewood Red Burst Finish-RARE)

Up for sale is my Ludwig Legacy 100th Anniversary Exotic Lacewood snare (Red Burst) in size 6.5x14. This snare comes with the original, unused batter head featuring the 100th Anniversary Badge (1909-2009, see included photo). All parts are original, in excellent condition, and have been meticulously cared for. Per the drum shop, this snare was part of a specific dealer configuration due to the Classic lugs. Some models from this year used tube lugs. Due to the Classic lugs, the snare possesses a timeless, iconic Ludwig aesthetic. This snare has been my go-to in all recording situations.

For transparency, there are 3 to 4 very minor, pin-sized dents in the shell, but NO scratches on the shell itself (see photos—last 4). There is no pitting other than one small snare-strike dent about 2cm in size on top of the metal hoop (see photos—last 4). There is also one minor scratch on the side of the rim caused by moving the snare around behind the kit (see photos—last 4). Please note that these minor cosmetic marks are only visible when the drum is angled directly into the light. Otherwise, the snare’s chrome, hardware, wood, and veneer finish are in flawless condition. The snare was purchased NEW from my local drum shop in 2009 as a collector piece but with studio use and some live gigging.

Build Specifications

• Shell Construction: 3-ply core consisting of an inner and outer layer of North American Maple sandwiching a traditional single Poplar core ply.
• Reinforcement Rings: Solid 1/4" thick Maple reinforcement rings for focused, vintage warmth.
• Bearing Edges: Inner 33-degree round-over edge with a outer 1/4" round-over.
• Hardware Configuration: Rare factory-ordered Classic Lugs (a specific dealer configuration package).
• Exterior Finish: Highly rare, hand-sprayed Red Burst Lacquer applied over premium Australian Exotic Lacewood veneer.
• Badges: Limited edition Ludwig 100th Anniversary Centenary badges (2009 production year)

Official information on this snare notes that during the centennial year, the vast majority of Legacy Exotic buyers opted for the standard Natural Gloss finish to highlight the wood’s distinctive, shifting Australian grain. Because burst options required a much more intensive hand-spraying process at the factory, they were ordered in far fewer numbers. Estimating across both finish types and all shell sizes, the number of 6.5x14 Lacewood snares featuring a factory burst lacquer finish is safely projected to be under 100 total units worldwide. Ludwig did not report the exact production number for this finish, but fewer than 100 is projected. The drum collecting community considers a 100th Anniversary Ludwig Legacy Exotic Lacewood snare in 6.5x14 to be a highly desirable, pro-tier instrument.

Additionally, Ludwig designated the Legacy Exotic line as a limited-quantity run based strictly on the availability of the exotic Australian timber logs they sourced, rather than a predetermined production cap.

Please note: I am not in a rush to sell this snare, but I do want it to go to someone who will appreciate its unique quality and sound, and who will give it the same care I have. As goofy as all that might sound, it has been a very difficult decision to let this snare go. However, due to personal reasons, I am no longer able to play drums.
