Blue Lion Baritone Custom Dulcimer w LR Baggs Pickup

Blue Lion Custom Baritone Dulcimer with Blue Lion LR Baggs pickup installed. This was a custom order with incredible inlays and upgrades. Read on for a full description including oddities!

The baritone is usually tuned a fourth lower (AEAA), which puts it in the key of A; it can be capoed in the 3rd fret to play in the key of D, or can be retuned to reverse Ionian ADAA to play in the key of D.

This dulcimer has a LOT of custom upgrades (including upgraded tonewoods and inlays) that push the price of one of these new towards $2,000.00. The upgrade prices are from Blue Lion's website.

This particular dulcimer has a solid Cedar top, East Indian Rosewood back and sides ($300.00 upgrade), Bookmatched binding, purfling,  & matching tailpiece ($300.00 upgrade), Backstrip ($50.00 upgrade), Heart soundholes ($40.00 upgrade), Schaller gold-plated tuning machines Six string, flat peghead ($75.00 upgrade), DULCIMER PICKUP Blue Lion / L.R. Baggs pickup ($229.00 upgrade installed), Gold strapjack ($30.00 upgrade) and a LOT of custom inlays including dolphins on the fretboard and winged doves on the peghead that are likely several hundred dollars more in upgrades.

It does have the 1 1/2 and 6 1/2 frets as well (also an upgrade).

Now for the "oddities". There is a missing 6th Schaller tuner. This could be installed easily if someone wanted to restore it to a 6-string - but it plays beautifully as a 4 or 5 string. There are some admittedly strange tiny nails on the players side of the fretboard (possibly for hanging it) and a some holes on the top that do not impact anything in terms of structure or sound but these must be mentioned as shown in the photos. There are some finish checks as well. But - despite these described "oddities" it is a cannon acoustically or plugged in. It sounds frankly incredible and is a really well made instrument.

I own several dulcimers and this one doesn't get much playing time as I tend to play in Mixolydian of D on my other Blue Lion and McCafferty and Yocky Dulcimers. I have priced this in light of the oddities. It will be packed and shipped well - there is no case or gigbag as it is an "oversized" dulcimer compared to standard cases and gigbags but DOES fit in a larger deeper case or gigbag that could be used for it.
