McPherson MG 4.5 – California Redwood / East Indian Rosewood – Endorsement Guitar – OHSC

If you're looking at this guitar, you probably already know what makes a McPherson special. The MG 4.5 is an extraordinary instrument, combining McPherson's unmistakable offset soundhole and innovative construction with tremendous projection, sustain and resonance.

This particular MG 4.5 features a California Redwood top with East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Redwood has some of the warmth and responsiveness often associated with cedar, but this guitar also has excellent clarity and presence. It responds beautifully to a light touch while still having plenty of headroom when played more aggressively.

The 4.5-inch body depth gives the guitar a surprisingly big, three-dimensional voice. It has a 1 3/4-inch nut, ebony fingerboard and bridge, figured koa binding, gold Schaller tuners, and an L.R. Baggs pickup system.

One particularly interesting feature of this guitar is its original McPherson factory label. It is marked “Endorsement” and “Not For Resale,” with serial number 1902E. I have contacted McPherson in hopes of obtaining the original build history and learning more about the endorsement designation, but at this time I do not have documentation identifying the original recipient. I am therefore selling the guitar based on what can be verified rather than making any claims about previous artist ownership.

Condition: The guitar presents extremely well overall, but I have conservatively listed the condition as Good because there are several areas of finish checking on the top. I had the top independently inspected by two luthiers, and both confirmed that these areas are in the finish and are not cracks in the wood. I've made an effort to photograph the checking clearly so there are no surprises.

There are also normal signs of careful use consistent with a previously played instrument. Please examine the photographs closely, and I'm happy to answer any questions about condition.

Most importantly, this is an exceptional-sounding guitar. The sustain and resonance are remarkable, and there's a depth and responsiveness to the instrument that is difficult to communicate in photographs.

A new Redwood/East Indian Rosewood MG 4.5 currently retails for $11,900 from McPherson, making this an opportunity to own a USA-built McPherson at substantially less than the cost of a new example.
