A completely original and fantastic
Vintage Original 1971 Guild "Artist Award" Archtop guitar
1971 Guild Artist Award in excellent condition. These were top of the line archtops that Guild produced in the early 1970s. What first started as the Johnny Smith Artist model in 1956 was renamed the "Artist Award" in 1961 when Johnny and Guild had a disagreement and he nullified his contract with them and moved his namesake to Gibson. This example is big and beautiful, and sounds fantastic. Guitar features an Ebony fingerboard with pearl block inlay, with abalone V insert. Highly figured maple back and sides with a solid spruce top. An incredible sounding and highly desirable DeArmond "Rhythm Chief" 1100 pickup is original to the guitar.
This Guild sounds great plugged in or even just acoustic. It has had a few minor modifications / upgrades over it's 55 year life span. These include an expert pro-refret with a new nut. A custom luthier-made rosewood bridge and base was made to perfectly fit the top carve of this amazing guitar. Additionally, a very attractive faux-tortoise celluloid pickguard was cut which holds separate volume and tone controls for the original Rhythm Chief 1100 pickup. This Guitar is well maintained and structurally solid. Comes with the original blue-plush lined Guild Badged hardshell case.
Models from this time period are very rare, and even harder to find in this sort of exceptional condition. The woods on this example are the the finest tightly grained spruce and incredibly flamed grade AAA maple. The voice on this guitar is incredibly warm, clear and articulate.
