The early Reverend guitars were all essentially semi-hollow, built around a wooden frame with phenolic laminate tops and backs (that's how our 2004 Rumblefish bass is built). The Charger Air HH takes a more conventional route, pairing a mahogany body with a solid spruce top for extra high-end detail, plus Steelhead humbucking pickups and Reverend's uber-useful bass contour control. Uniquely Reverend and uniquely useful, this is semi-hollow done the Reverend way, and it looks fantastic in Metallic Bordeaux with a violin-brown back.
So what does semi-hollow construction bring to the party? In our experience, it gives a guitar a more balanced, complex and smoother voice, with a slight trade-off in attack and low-end punch. That's why semi-hollows have long been favorites of rhythm guitarists and jazz players, and less so of country pickers and hard rock chuggers.
The Reverend Steelhead pickups are designed to make the most of the semi-hollow body, combining Alnico 5 and Ceramic magnets with oversized steel pole pieces. The Alnico magnet brings a warm, organic top end, while the Ceramic magnet adds snappy attack and touch sensitivity. Ceramic magnets are often associated with high-output metal pickups, but their efficiency makes them wonderfully responsive to playing nuances. With medium output, these Steelheads interact beautifully with pedals, delivering plenty of sparkle, complexity, and sensitivity to your picking style.
Adding even more versatility, the Reverend bass contour control is a true standout. Technically it's a simple high-pass filter, but the results are impressive: gradual, musical, and when you roll off the bass the guitar never feels weaker, just leaner and more defined. With humbucking pickups it's far more useful than any coil split, and if you're typically not a fan of neck humbuckers, the bass contour control may just win you over. On an HH guitar it unlocks funky, snappy tones that would otherwise be out of reach. Under the hood, the wiring is tidy, with full-size Alpha pots, film capacitors, and shielding paint.
For many years all Reverend guitars were bolt-on, and the Charger Air HH carries on that lineage with a nicely finished 6-bolt roasted maple neck, locking tuners and a triple string tree. We measured the neck at around .830" at the first fret and .880" at the 12th. Reverend calls the profile "Medium Oval," but it lands right in slim C territory, much like you'd find on American Fenders or the sadly departed G&L Modern Classic. A dark rosewood fretboard and nicely finished medium jumbo frets round out a neck that's comfortable and easy to play.
The Charger Air HH delivers all the benefits of a semi-hollow, and the Steelhead pickups add a dose of attack and dynamics that many semis lack. It's an extremely capable guitar for a wide variety of genres, and a great-looking one, too.

In the words of Reverend:
Warm, rich, and alive. The Reverend Air Charger HH is built to breathe. A solid slab of mahogany is routed out to yield a full-length center block. This construction delivers sustain you can feel. A spruce top adds shimmer, clarity, and harmonic sparkle. The semi-hollow construction adds resonance, depth, and musical response. Steelhead HBs with oversized steel poles offer punch, clarity, and dynamic response. Bold colors, violin brown backs, and a new headstock logo are distinctly Reverend. Signature Shooting Star f-holes complete the unmistakable look. The Reverend Charger Air HH is perfect for those seeking warm, rich cleans, extremely responsive overdrive tones, and controllable feedback.
