Hello + welcome to my small stall here on Reverb .. Im a hobbyist musician, sound designer and sound artist. I have had a few releases out + and Im always trying out new techniques for sound capturing.

Small vibrations. Entire sound worlds.
A mint, boxed stereo pair: two Barcus-Berry Planar Wave contact pickups and two 4000XL piezo preamps. Tested and working.

Who is it for?
Sound designers, soundscape and Foley recordists, and musicians recording acoustic instruments. For anyone who hears a strange little sound and thinks: I could make something with that.

What does it do?
Records sound travelling through materials: a guitar body, a vibrating panel, a resonant object. It gives you a different perspective from a microphone in the air.

How does it work?
Each pickup feeds its own 4000XL preamp, and each preamp goes to one input on your interface or recorder: two pickups → two preamps → two channels → DAW. These are two mono systems used together, so stereo width comes from placement and mixing. Check phase when you combine related signals.

• Foley and sound design: record textures straight from the surface, like creaking wood, scraped metal, glass and paper, with no room sound
• Stereo contact recording: two pickups and two preamps capture a surface in true stereo, for example both ends of a piano soundboard or both sides of a guitar body
• Acoustic instruments: guitar, violin, cello, double bass, mandolin, kalimba and hang drum. Stick-on mounting leaves no marks
• Piano and harp soundboards: a close, clean signal that doesn't pick up the rest of the band on stage
• Percussion: frame drums, cajón, tabla and hand percussion, where you want the body of the drum rather than the room
• Field recording: fences, railings, bridges, pipes and wires. It picks up sound travelling through the material (plug-in power or a 9V battery works away from the studio)
• Experimental and ambient music: amplify springs, toys, bowls and found objects, then feed the result into effects and modular gear
• Live sound: feedback-resistant pickup for acoustic acts, with a balanced XLR out straight to the desk
• Studio DI: the ¼″ input takes other piezo pickups too. It gives them the high 2.2 MΩ input they need, so they sound full instead of thin and quacky
• Monitoring while you record: the monitor output lets you hear the contact sound live while the XLR goes to your recorder

What could you create?

• Guitar: stretch a recorded resonance into an atmospheric texture.
• Percussion: chop taps and scrapes into your own sampler kit.
• Cinema: slow down and layer a creak to build tension under a scene.
• Soundscapes: pan or layer two resonant perspectives into an evolving environment.
• Acoustic instruments: piano or harp soundboards, or guitar-body resonance where mounting is suitable.
