DESCRIPTION

Up for sale is a beautiful full-size (4/4) vintage  violin modeled after the legendary 1734 Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù” pattern, such as the famous Violon du Diable. Based on its construction, model, and varnish characteristics, this instrument appears to have been made during the interwar period of the 1920s–1930s in the renowned violin-making center of Schönbach, Czechoslovakia.

Unlike many basic student-grade trade instruments from this period, this violin features attractive, higher-quality tonewoods, including a beautiful one-piece maple back and well-seasoned spruce top.

The violin has a striking Guarneri-inspired design, with elongated, powerful-looking f-holes and the broad lower-bout proportions characteristic of the model. The one-piece maple back displays a subtle, tight horizontal flame and is particularly attractive.

The violin is finished in a traditional shaded spirit varnish, with a glowing golden-amber center transitioning into rich reddish-brown tones toward the edges. The overall appearance has a tasteful antique character consistent with instruments of this period.

Inside the violin is a traditional Guarneri facsimile label reading “Joseph Guarnerius fecit Cremonae anno 1734,” with the final digits completed by hand. 

The violin has been recently restored and professionally set up. It is equipped with a clean ebony fingerboard, high-grade ebony tailpiece, and a comfortable ebony chin rest. It is ready to play.

SOUND

This instrument is an absolute “powerhouse,” offering a deep, robust sound filled with rich colors, resonance, and overtones. It also has excellent projection, making it particularly well suited for both solo and ensemble playing.

The mature European tonewoods give the instrument a character and depth that are especially appealing to players looking for a powerful, full-bodied sound.

CONDITION

The violin is in excellent vintage structural condition for its age. It has recently been restored and professionally set up, and is ready to play.
