This 1942 Gibson SJ in Sunburst features one of our favorite Gibson logos of all time – the “banner” logo. From 1942 to 1946, Gibson headstocks sported their slogan, “Only a Gibson is Good Enough.” As a result, guitars from this period are often called banner Gibsons. These years coincide with the United States’ efforts in WWII. As men went off to fight in the war, Gibson hired women to make up for their lost workforce, often referred to as the “Kalamazoo Gals.” Many players revere models from this era for the attention to detail and craftsmanship (or should we say…craftswomanship) that went into each instrument. This particular “Southern Jumbo” matches that high quality, playing and sounding incredible. The model was advertised for its deep, brilliant tone, and we can agree that those are traits we would use to describe this guitar. If you’ve had your heart set on a Banner Gibson, you may have met your match.
