Melcor SME-20 Shelving Equalizers

I’m in downsize mode and the time has come to part with his awesome pair of Melcor SME-20 shelving equalizers. I’ve owned them since 2002

These are very rare modules. Based on the date codes I believe they are from 1969 and 1970. The 1969 Melcor price guide listed them at $330. ($2800 today). They are quite unique and sound really cool. Transformer in and out. Anything you run through them sounds stronger and more present. I really like them on kick drum, vocals and acoustic guitars. All knob settings are indented for specific recall if required. Even when disengaged they add a subtle character just by passing audio through the transformers. 

Melcor modules predate api and are slightly larger and have different connectors than 500 series modules so when I obtained them I built a custom wooden lunchbox and powered them with a Lambda LXD-A-152-R regulated power supply (+/- 15volts DC) and wired up XLR in/out. I also replaced the non-working LEDs. They are plug and play.

The rear connectors are each missing one of the two tightening screws and one is connector is cracked, but they stay securely in place and function properly (part number 5040-14P by Precision Connectors, Inc.)

A few years ago a couple of the original Melcor 1731 opamps went bad so I replaced all four of them with new Capi  1731’s. These opamps sound identical to the originals to my ears.

The left module works perfectly in all settings. The right module works well but when the EQ is engaged, the bass response reduces somewhat, but can be adjusted to sound close to flat when the low frequency knob is turned up to compensate. The other frequencies on that module sound fine until you turn the upper-mid and/or high shelf to their highest position, then a ringing noise occurs. This module is quite usable as is in most normal settings but could benefit from having a tech check out this issue. Maybe it’s time for a recap.
