This is an original Centaur from Klon’s original production era—not a KTR, reissue, or modern clone. The circuit board is hand-marked “1895” and retains the characteristic factory black epoxy encapsulation commonly seen in original Centaurs. The three potentiometers carry visible “9824” date codes. The professional Japanese dealer from whom the pedal was sourced identified the completed unit as a 1999 example; I am therefore describing it conservatively as circa 1999 rather than claiming an exact production date.

CONDITION

This pedal is in very good overall condition for its age, with honest cosmetic wear from normal use and storage.

The gold enclosure shows light-to-moderate surface scratches, small marks, finish wear, and natural patina, particularly around the raised edges and corners. The bottom plate also shows surface scratches and handling wear. The control labels, Centaur graphic, knobs, footswitch, input/output jacks, and rear Klon label remain present and clearly visible.

There are no major dents, cracks, or structural damage visible. Please examine all high-resolution photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description and show the exact pedal being offered.

ORIGINALITY

No modifications or repairs were disclosed by the previous professional dealer, and no alterations or service have been performed during my ownership.

As with all original Centaurs, much of the circuit is covered by the factory-applied black epoxy. Components beneath the epoxy cannot be visually inspected without damaging the circuit, but detailed photographs of all accessible internal areas, wiring, potentiometers, jacks, switch, circuit board, and battery compartment are included.

FUNCTION

I have personally tested the pedal with a guitar and amplifier using both a fresh 9V battery and a compatible regulated 9V power supply. It powers on correctly, passes signal in both bypass and engaged modes, and the LED, footswitch, Gain, Treble, and Output controls all operate as intended. No functional issues were observed during testing.

The Centaur can be used as a clear boost, an always-on tone shaper, or a harmonically rich low-to-medium-gain overdrive. At lower Gain settings it adds level and presence while preserving pick attack; increasing the Gain produces greater saturation and compression without losing articulation.

POWER NOTE

Please use only a clean, properly regulated 9V DC power supply compatible with the original Centaur power jack, or a standard 9V battery. Do not power this pedal at 12V or 18V. A dedicated power supply is recommended for an original vintage Centaur.
