The Randall RG80ES is a vintage 1980s solid-state guitar amp head that has become something of a cult classic among ’80s hard-rock and metal players.
- 80-watt solid-state/FET amplifier, rather than a tube amp.
- Two channels with separate gain and volume controls.
- Shared bass, middle, treble, presence, and spring reverb controls.
- The “ES” stands for Extra Sustain. Pulling the treble control on the original version activates an additional gain/sustain circuit.
- It was commonly sold as a head + speaker cabinet stack, although RG80 versions also existed as combos
The RG80ES has a reputation for an unusually good high-gain solid-state tone. It's tight, aggressive, and saturated without becoming especially fuzzy. The clean channel is also surprisingly good, with the spring reverb giving it a somewhat Fender-like character.
It's particularly associated with the early/mid-1980s metal and hard-rock sound—think Dokken, George Lynch, and Dimebag Darrell territory.
One interesting detail is that players generally consider the earlier 1985–86-ish examples especially desirable, with some owners describing them as smoother and fuller than later versions.
Marshall-ish crunch → saturated ’80s metal → tight, singing lead tone
