2002 Martin DM Mahogany Dreadnought – Made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania

Selling my early-2000s Martin DM Road Series dreadnought, serial #894626. This is one of the older USA-made DMs, handcrafted in Nazareth, PA, from an interesting period in Martin’s Road Series history.

One of the things that makes these older DMs appealing is the construction: a real solid spruce top paired with laminated mahogany back and sides, along with Martin’s A-frame/X-bracing and satin finish. At the more affordable end of Martin’s current lineup, many dreadnoughts now use HPL construction and are made at Martin’s Mexico facility, so these older Nazareth-built DMs occupy a pretty unique spot in the Martin lineup.

The guitar has been played and shows normal cosmetic wear for a 20+ year-old instrument, including small dings, marks and surface scratches. I’ve tried to photograph the condition accurately. There is no structural damage, and the back, neck and headstock in particular have held up very nicely. No cracks or warping or anything like that.

The solid spruce top has aged to a really nice warm color, and the mahogany-patterned back and sides still present beautifully. This is not a museum-piece Martin—it’s a genuine player that has been used and enjoyed—but it’s also a nicely preserved example with its original case and unusually complete documentation.

I had the nut and bridge replaced with bone and the first 5 frets redone by a professional luthier. The guitar has a professionally installed pickup, making it ready for live use. I do not currently know the exact pickup model, so I’m not going to guess at the brand.

These DMs have earned a great reputation as straightforward, no-frills American-made Martins: classic dreadnought body, solid spruce top, understated appointments, and the Martin name on a guitar actually built in Nazareth.
