The original Tung-Sol 5881 was a ruggedized version of the 6L6 family, designed for demanding military/industrial applications. Tung-Sol’s own specification describes increased plate and screen dissipation and improved resistance to shock and vibration.
And these old Tung-Sols have a particularly good reputation among vintage tube users. Vintage examples are described as having a warm, smooth character with good bass and a slightly softer presentation.
