The TEAC X‑2000R is one of those rare machines that instantly signals you’re serious about analog. This was TEAC’s top‑tier, no‑compromise “pro‑sumer” deck—the one people bought when they wanted studio‑grade performance without hauling home a broadcast console.

With its dual‑capstan transport, auto‑reverse recording, and famously smooth tape handling, the X‑2000R represents the absolute peak of late‑era reel‑to‑reel engineering. For vintage hi‑fi collectors, it’s a trophy piece: the kind of deck that doesn’t just play tapes, but elevates an entire system. If you’re looking for a flagship machine from the last great chapter of analog tape—something built with real heft, real precision, and real presence—this is the one that earns its spot on the rack.

I would have honestly kept this one -- but I am plumb out of space, so hopefully it will land with someone who appreciates this machine - both aesthetically and what it represents in the realm of the 80s HiFi.

The faceplate and the head cover are almost entirely metal -- gives the machine a heavy, "battleship" look that feels authentic to the early 80s high-end audio era. 

Mechanically excellent. Very clean inside as well. Went through a thorough review and rebuild.

This was done by a professional restorer I use and cost $400. But, this should ensure that it would last for another 40 years with proper care.

The work included:

• Replacement of takeup motor
• Adjustment of supply and takeup reel mechanisms
• Adjustment of tension arms
• Cleaning, lubrication of moving parts, and calibration, demagnetizing the heads

Comes with extras - what you see in the pictures (the reels in the video are just for the demo). Never understood why many sellers don't include bits that are needed to be able to use the machines out of the box... Altogether it will include:

• TEAC 10.5" takeup reel - a $50 "value"
• Original NAB adapters ($100 "value")
• pre-recorded 10.5" reel with tape (a lagniappe)

Whatever blemishes are there are minor; the only thing that is apparent is the social security number of the previous owner scratched into the back of the case (which was a thing back then and is "period-correct"... :-)).

Perhaps you can find it listed elsewhere for less (and I have seen them go for MORE) - but, in my case, you would be getting a thoroughly checked-out and refreshed unit with no stories.

See the feedback; I don't buy items to flip - it's not a source of income for me (especially when you consider the Reverb fees), no matter what IRS would like to think. These are "rescues", something I enjoy doing.

IRS now charges "income tax" on Reverb sales -- so, expect the prices to go up to compensate.

It will go out well packed and fully insured - through UPS Ground/Reverb Safe Shipping - given the weight, it's not cheap but is WELL WORTH the surety it brings.
