Used less than an hour

Oh, the Shure M44C is a cool old cartridge — and a bit of a tank.

It’s a moving-magnet stereo phono cartridge from Shure’s classic M44 family, introduced in the 1960s. The M44 line eventually became famous in broadcast, jukebox, club, and DJ applications because the cartridges were rugged, high-output, and tracked extremely reliably. Shure was already advertising the M44 series as widely used by radio stations by 1969.

The M44C specifically was the heavy-tracking version of the family. Shure designed it for record changers and applications where reliability mattered more than feather-light tracking.

What makes it interesting

The output is huge for a normal moving-magnet cartridge. Something around 9.5 mV means it'll hit a phono preamp noticeably harder than a lot of modern cartridges, which are commonly in the 3–5 mV neighborhood.

Sonically, the M44 family has a reputation for a big, punchy, energetic presentation — strong bass, lots of drive, and excellent tracking. It's not really the stereotypical delicate audiophile cartridge meant to extract microscopic ambience from a pristine pressing. It's more of a:

“Put a record on and make the room come alive” cartridge.

The M44C is even more toward that rugged end because of its relatively low compliance and 3–5 g tracking range.

And there's one particularly useful thing about the body:

All the M44-series styli were interchangeable.

So an M44C body isn't necessarily condemned to being a 4-gram record-changer cartridge. Shure offered different stylus assemblies for the same body, including the lighter-tracking N44-7, N44G, elliptical N44E, mono LP N44-1, and 78-rpm N44-3. Shure explicitly documented the stylus interchangeability.
