Roswell Colares (Boutique Vocal Condenser Microphone)

Perfect working condition with some very minor scuffs on the body (visible in the last photo). You can actually order a new body from Roswell, if you like. Sounds great! It's had occasional use in a smoke-free studio for the past five years. I do not have the original box or case, but I am including the Rycote shock mount.

If you're looking for a big ElaM-251 style vocal mic, this one is for you. They retail for $1,499. It's just about the best vocal condenser I've heard in its price range.

Here's my trade show pitch for the Colares: Think 'Fet 251' with a saturation control.

If you're not familiar with the original ElaM 251, it's considered a "holy grail" vocal mic; pristine vintage examples command prices north of $15,000. In designing the Colares, I targeted two critical sonic characteristics of the original 251 design:

• Even-order harmonic saturation
• Clarity, intimacy, and detail without harshness

Harmonic saturation can be made with tubes, but tube mics can to be noisy and fragile. Inexpensive (sub-$2000) tube mics are especially at risk for unwanted voltage drift, noise, and distortion. Rather than create a compromised tube circuit, we designed a solid-state alternative that creates second-order harmonic saturation. This mic gives your tracks a rich, musical sound that can't be duplicated with EQ or compression. 
The harmonics in the Colares come from a combination of components, circuit topology, and an oversized output transformer. Our investment into components has benefitted this mic's sound, too; the Colares output capacitor is massive, because it is made with paper in oil, like the best-sounding "tone" capacitors in audio history.
Because the amount of harmonic content from the Colares circuit might be too much for a given source and production, we built in a mechanism to bypass it. That's not a feature you'll find on a vintage 251, much less any so-called "clone." In the Colares, the onboard pad switch doubles as a saturation control. It lowers the mic's output by 10dB, but also cuts harmonic content by 12dB. Simply apply 10dB of makeup gain on your preamp, and the Colares with its pad engaged will give you a cleaner, more modern sounding track.
The mic's frequency curve comes substantially from the capsule. Our Colares capsule is voiced with a very open top end and a full bottom end. There is no hype or harshness in this capsule; it excels at capturing a "big vocal" sound with emotion and intimacy, typically with no EQ needed (although the mic takes EQ very well without sounding unnatural).

We built 3 low-frequency curves into the Colares, selectable via a 3-way switch on the mic. This switch allows you to sculpt the mic's low-frequency response to suit your specific track.
Engineers love the Colares on vocals as well as acoustic guitar and bass. A pair of Colares makes a formidable solution for drum overheads. 

The mic includes our exclusive Cutaway[tm] non-resonant shockmount, a hard case, and a Roswell mic sock (which keeps dust off the mic when the mic is left set up in the studio).

The Colares was used on at least two recent Grammy-winning records, in two very different contexts:

• Karol G used the Colares for vocals on her 2023 release, MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO. This album won a Latin Grammy in 2023 ("Album of the Year") and a Grammy in 2024 ("Best Música Urbana Album").
• Ross Hogarth used a Colares as the room mic for all the guest guitar tracks on Edgar Winter's 2022 release, BROTHER JOHNNY. The guitarists included Joe Bonamassa, Keb Mo, Joe Walsh, Kenny Wayne Shephard, Billy Gibbons, Derek Trucks, Steve Lukather, and Doyle Bramhall II. The record won a Grammy in 2023 ("Contemporary Blues Album").
