This is one of those guitars that reminds you just how good Fender’s vintage-inspired instruments can be.
Built in January 2018 to celebrate sixty years of the Jazzmaster, this Limited Edition 60th Anniversary ’58 Jazzmaster was Fender’s tribute to the original prototype of Leo Fender’s groundbreaking offset design. From the ash body and 2-color sunburst to the gold anodized pickguard and vintage-spec neck, it captures the look and feel of the Jazzmaster at the very beginning.
And it looks spectacular.
The ash body wears a beautifully thin 2-color sunburst lacquer finish, paired with a gloss nitrocellulose-lacquered maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Like the other vintage-style Fenders of mine with these deliberately thin, period-correct lacquer finishes, it has picked up some honest wear along the way. To me, that’s part of the appeal—it looks and feels like a guitar that has been played rather than something sealed under glass.
The neck has a vintage 7.25" radius, 21 vintage-tall frets, bone nut, vintage clay-dot inlays, heel-adjust truss rod, and Pure Vintage single-line “Fender Deluxe” tuners. It feels fantastic in the hand.
A pair of Pure Vintage ’65 Jazzmaster single-coils delivers the unmistakable wide, open Jazzmaster sound, with the full traditional lead and rhythm circuits. Fender’s vintage-style floating tremolo with tremolo lock and push-in arm completes the package.
Visually, though, the gold anodized aluminum pickguard against the 2-color sunburst may be the star of the show. It’s an absolutely gorgeous guitar and a remarkably faithful celebration of Fender’s original 1958 design.
Best of all, this one comes with the complete original anniversary package: the special vintage-style tweed hard case embroidered with the 60th Anniversary logo, Certificate of Authenticity, original case candy, and accompanying materials. These pieces are increasingly important on a limited-edition Fender like this, and everything has stayed with the guitar.
I’m only moving it along because as much as I love the look and feel of a great Jazzmaster, I’m ultimately a Strat-and-Tele guy. I’d be very happy to see this one go to someone who will put it to better use.
