Here we have a very fine example of an early 1964 Gretsch Double Anniversary model 6118 in the Smoke Green finish. The guitar comes to us from a huge never ending vintage instrument collector's temperature controlled storage estate we have been selling from for 5 years. Let's just say he had very good taste and once a month we never know what 5-20 pieces we are going to get..
Cosmetically quite clean for a 62 year old guitar. There are flaws, scratches, and light honest aging and wear with the gorgeous finish fading nicely. One of the pickup rings has a hard to see crack at 1 of the mounting screws and there is 1 small crack on the pickguard on the top mounting screw. Neither are serious at all. I think the pictures tell the story.
I cleaned the fully functional electronics, cleaned and seasoned the fretboard, and installed a fresh set of Ernie ball .10-.46 strings. All set up. The frets show no wear whatsoever. They look new.
This is one of the good versions not just from it's components but all of the binding on this guitar is totally intact everywhere and in excellent aged condition. It does have the one factory split at the bottom of the body. I have shown a picture of that one same area where the binding is starting to come away from the body. I pressed very hard to get no movement so it is not coming apart.
This structurally solid guitar plays really well and smoothly with a nice jazzy acoustic sound not even plugged in. Plugged in is a different story as those older pickups really do a job in the volume and tone department. Very much fun to play.
Comes with an older hard Deluxe sewn case pictured that could be original.
Not sure on that but the case is nice and works perfect.
A very fine vintage guitar that is somewhat rare in this condition.

Facts & Specs:

Historical Context:
- Production Era: The sequential serial number (75351) confirms a late 1964 build. This is the highly desirable pre-Baldwin era, which is characterized by traditional build techniques and superior collectibility.
- Two-Tone Smoke Green Finish: Over the decades, the lighter mint-green top coat naturally yellows from UV exposure and nitrocellulose aging, shifting the original pale green into a distinct yellowish hue.
Technical Specifications:
(1964 Model 6118)The Double Anniversary was originally launched to celebrate Gretsch's 75th year in business. By 1964, the model featured several distinctive design evolutions:
- Body Construction: 16-inch wide, 2.5-inch deep fully hollow laminated Maple body with a single cutaway. It features single-ply white/cream binding on the top and back.
- Neck Profile: Set-in Maple neck (typically 2-piece with a dark Walnut center strip). It features a medium "C" profile, a 24.6-inch scale length, and a 1 11/16-inch nut width.
- Fingerboard: Rosewood fingerboard featuring pearloid Neo-Classic "Thumbnail" inlays. Unlike earlier versions, 1964 models would feature a bound fingerboard and a zero fret situated just before the nut. This particular guitar did 'not' get the zero fret.
- Pickups & Electronics: Dual single-coil Gretsch HiLo'Tron pickups. The control layout consists of a Master Volume on the upper treble bout, independent volume controls for each pickup on the lower treble bout, a 3-way pickup selector switch, and a 3-way tone selector toggle switch (in place of a traditional tone knob).
- Hardware: Chrome-plated hardware including an Ebony-based Space Control roller bridge, a trapeze "G" cutout tailpiece, open-gear Waverly tuners, a dark green plexi pickguard with a gold Gretsch logo, and a small metal "Anniversary Model" plate on the headstock.

NOTE: Too cool. Late last summer we shipped a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
