This might be just the ticket for you if you're struggling to get along with all-digital modelers. This just isn't a simulation of Friedman's Dirty Shirley preamp: it IS a Dirty Shirley preamp, two of them in fact!

The Dirty Shirley, and its larger sibling the Twin Sister (which like this pedal is two Dirty Shirleys), is Dave Friedman's hot-rodded take on the Marshall JTM45, which leans more into classic rock and early metal, like AC/DC, early Judas Priest, and early Iron Maiden. That said, early Van Halen is definitely achievable with the Structure switch toggled up (highest gain) and the Gain at 2 o'clock or higher.

Key features of the Friedman IR-D include:

• All-Tube, High-Voltage Preamp: Powered by two 12AX7 preamp tubes running at proper high voltage for true tube tone, harmonic richness, and touch response. It's uncanny how "tubey" it feels and how well it cleans up when you roll your guitar's volume knob back.
• Dual Independent Channels with Boost: Features two fully independent identical channels, each with its own independent and highly tweakable boost circuit. This provides access to four distinct tones (Channel 1, Channel 1 + Boost, Channel 2, Channel 2 + Boost).
• Dirty Shirley/Twin Sister Voicing: The channels are based on Friedman's legendary Dirty Shirley/Twin Sister circuits, delivering the signature British-inspired tone known for its tight bottom end and rich detail.
• Integrated IR Cabinet and Power Amp Simulation: Includes built-in DSP Impulse Response (IR) cabinet and power amp simulation to send a studio-quality, mic'd-up tone to a DAW or Front-of-House (FOH).
• Comprehensive Controls: Each channel features a full 3-band passive EQ, Volume, Gain, independent Boost Volume and Gain controls, a 2-way Bright switch (down position, beefy low end, great for single coils; up, a slight bass cut, great for humbuckers), and a 3-way Structure switch for extensive tonal shaping (center position, lowest gain; down, mid-gain; up, highest gain). For the Boost Gain control (seen in a photo of the right side of the pedal), just take the fat end of your guitar pick, insert it into the dial, and turn it clockwise for more gain.
• MIDI Control: Fully MIDI-capable, allowing for up to 128 programmable presets to control channel/boost selection, IR select, effects loop on/off, and more.
• Onboard IRs and Custom Loading: Comes preloaded some of Dave Friedman's favorite cabinet IRs, including six from OwnHammer, with the ability to load your own third-party IRs via the software editor (which you download from Friedman's website). The IR section is also bypassable.
• IR-D Editor Software: The Editor software allows for deep editing, including per-channel Power Amp Simulation (Thump and Presence controls), IR management, and preset saving.
• Flexible Connectivity: Includes an ultra-transparent series FX loop, a TRS balanced output (DI), a headphone output for silent practice, and USB MIDI for the editor software.
