An Italian-made Tone Bender in the hammer-gray case configuration!
VOX's Tone Bender was released in late 1966, based on the Sola Sound Tone Bender MK1.5 that had debuted earlier that same year. By 1968 the spec had shifted again to a black case with a silver panel. Arbiter's Fuzz Face was also designed around the MK1.5, so the two circuits are closely related. Where the Fuzz Face leans fat, the VOX Tone Bender cuts through with sharp highs - though this particular unit leans toward a mid-low-focused voice. It's on the higher-gain side compared to many medium-gain examples out there, with plenty of thickness and a touch of gatey character. Clean examples with their tone intact have gotten genuinely hard to find in recent years. Stamped "6407" on the back cover. Roll back the guitar volume and it cleans up beautifully. Among the many units we've handled, this is one of the better-sounding examples.
Transistors: SFT363, SFT337
*Battery snap wiring is on the shorter side - please be careful not to pull and snap it when opening the back cover.
Era: 1960s
Included accessories: none
