Vintage RARE 1950's era Knight 4550 dynamic cardioid microphone Hi Z / Electro Voice 664 Dual Z w cable # 2
Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
If you are a big fan of the Electro Voice 664 and you are looking for something with the same overall look and tone then you might want to give this Knight 4550 mic with the longer cable in which to operate a try.
Pic # 2 is the only advertisement I have ever found on this Knight 4550 which is pretty non-detailed but still an interesting description of the 4550 model. I have never come across another data sheet or listing since.
It should be noted right away that this 4550 mic is in excellent working condition and is is a dual impedance mic depending on how the cable or mic is wired but it's currently set at High Z so in this setting the mic is void of bass. This will be best for a HAM radio set up or any other audio equipment built for Hi Z microphones. If you're looking for a mic with an old school "rockabilly" tone that's dirtier in nature then this mic will do nicely. The mic is uni-directional in nature as well so it tends to pick up what directly in front of the mic blocking out most background noise.
The 4550 may look just like the E.V 664 in many ways but I can assure you that the dynamic cardioid elements on both mics are not the same. They both have very unique designs internally.
This mic would have been ideal for both singing and broadcasting in a low Z setting but again, it's currently in High Z mode.
The Knight 4550 Cardioid Dynamic microphone comes with a beautiful, quality polished chrome finish. This microphone is just slightly bigger than your classic Electro Voice 664 but has softer, more elegant lines. This microphone was manufactured in Chicago, Ill by Allied Radio Corp. I'm not sure what ever happened to this company but this 4550 was their shining star.
As you can see in the pictures provided the body on this mic is damn near perfect with with zero dents, heavy scratches or pitting. The chrome absolutely glows as does the metal mesh screen and the ON / OFF switch slides smooth as it should. No issues. This mic is real tight...nothing loose. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The threads for the stand and cable are perfect with no wear or cracks.
This mic is very top heavy so you'll want to used a desk or floor stand with a wider, heavier base so it won't tip easily.
This mic would be ideal for the collector of vintage microphones due to it's rarity and amazing overall physical condition.
I would rate this mic a very conservative 9 physically speaking on a scale of 1 - 10.
The mic comes with a shorter 12 foot 4 pin screw on cable in which to operate this mic. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. It has a quality Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amplifiers.
A very cool package deal all around.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
