A superb player’s Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s with a couple of very worthwhile twists.

This is a 2023 Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s Plain Top in Ebony, supplied with its Gibson hard case, paperwork and accessories. The previous owner has upgraded the original pickups to a pair of Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Special humbuckers, retaining the traditional chrome covers, and has also installed a fully functional killswitch between the controls.

For someone who wants a classic Les Paul with a slightly more individual setup, this is a very cool guitar. The Saturday Night Specials are a particularly nice match for a Les Paul, giving plenty of vintage character but with a little more clarity, punch and openness than you might expect from a hotter modern pickup.

The guitar itself plays incredibly well. The SlimTaper ’60s mahogany neck is quick and comfortable, the action feels excellent, and acoustically it has all the weight and resonance you would expect from a good Les Paul Standard. Plugged in, the upgraded Seymour Duncans sound fantastic, from warm neck tones through to articulate, powerful bridge sounds.

Condition

Overall this is a very tidy used example, but it has clearly been played and we have priced it accordingly.

There are some visible scratches to the front of the Ebony finish, particularly around the lower section of the top. These have been deliberately photographed under direct lighting to show them as clearly as possible and they appear more prominent in the close-up photographs than they generally do in normal lighting.

There are also:

* A couple of small nicks around the headstock

* Light buckle rash and surface marking to the back

* General light surface scratches and normal player wear

* Minor marks consistent with regular use

Nothing here affects the playability or performance of the guitar.

Upgrades

The original Gibson Burstbucker pickups have been replaced with:

Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Special Humbuckers

These use Alnico IV magnets and sit beautifully between vintage PAF sweetness and a more assertive modern response. They retain plenty of warmth and harmonic complexity but add excellent note definition and a little more authority when pushed.

The chrome pickup covers have been retained, so visually the guitar still keeps its traditional Les Paul Standard appearance.

A killswitch has also been professionally incorporated into the control area. It is fully functional and gives instant signal cut-off for rhythmic stutter effects and more experimental playing styles. It will not be for everybody, but for the right player it is a genuinely useful addition.

Classic Les Paul Standard ’60s Construction

Underneath the modifications, this remains the familiar modern Gibson interpretation of a late-’60s Les Paul Standard.

The body is constructed from mahogany with a plain maple top, finished in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The Ebony finish gives it a beautifully understated appearance and lets the traditional cream plastics, nickel hardware and gold reflector knobs stand out.

The mahogany neck uses Gibson’s SlimTaper profile, noticeably slimmer than the ’50s Standard neck and particularly suited to players who prefer a faster feel.

An Indian rosewood fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets with traditional trapezoid inlays and a 12” radius.
