A thick, punchy low end from a toaster pickup paired with a hi-gain pickup - a modified 4003!
Successor to the 4001, the 4003 remains the definitive Rickenbacker bass to this day.
Neck binding, body binding, and slightly rounded triangle inlays give it a distinctive look, and it carries Rickenbacker's signature Rick-O-Sound output too.
This 1994 example is a modified unit with a replaced front pickup - the original hi-gain pickup has been swapped for a toaster pickup, and the body has been routed to move the mounting position closer to the neck. The pickguard and truss rod cover have also been replaced accordingly. (Original pickup, pickguard, and truss rod cover are not included.) The routing was done at a workshop in Japan and is very cleanly finished.
A thick, punchy low end and strong presence define the tone. The front toaster pickup delivers plenty of low end and sweetness while still keeping things well-defined - the low end dominates in volume, but attack and string sparkle come through clearly, so you still get Rickenbacker's characteristic three-dimensional sound.
