The Golden Age Project PRE-73 DLX — a single-channel vintage-style microphone / line / instrument preamplifier built around the classic 1073 topology. The signal path uses only discrete components — resistors, capacitors and transistors, no integrated circuits — and the mic input, line input and line output are all transformer balanced, using three separate transformers each optimised for its role. The result is the warm, punchy, forward character that made the original module famous, at a fraction of the cost.

This is the DLX version, which adds the features that make the preamp genuinely versatile: a post-transformer output pad, an inductor-based high-pass filter, and an insert point that lets you patch an EQ or compressor between the input and output transformers. The pad is the real trick — wind the gain up to saturate the output transformer, then pad the level back down, and you get everything from gentle thickening to hard, dirty drive without overloading whatever comes next.

This unit has been cleaned and fully function-tested by the seller, a professional electronic musical instrument technician.

Working Condition

• Fully tested and confirmed working. Every control and switch was checked individually.
• Verified: mic input, line input, front-panel DI / instrument input, 48V phantom power, LOW-Z input impedance switch, inductor-based high-pass filter, insert send/return, ground lift, and the gain and output level controls.
• Output pad tested at every position — 0, -7, -14, -21 and -28 dB all working correctly.
• The 4-step LED output meter responds correctly across the full range.
• All pots, switches and the stepped gain switch operate smoothly — no scratchiness, no crackle, no intermittent contacts.

Servicing Performed

• All internal contacts — switches, connectors and internal terminals — have been thoroughly cleaned.
• The chassis and front panel were disassembled and cleaned inside and out.
• Completely stock: no circuit modifications and no replaced components. The unit is exactly as Golden Age Project built it — no aftermarket transformer or capacitor swaps.

Power Supply — Please Read Before Buying

• The PRE-73 DLX runs from an external 24V AC power supply. The original adapter is included.
• The included adapter is a Japanese domestic unit with an AC100V mains input. Outside Japan it will require a step-down transformer, or you can substitute any 24V AC supply that meets the unit's requirement.
• Please note: this is a 24V AC supply, not DC. A DC adapter of the same voltage is not a substitute and may damage the unit.
• Cosmetic note on the adapter: there is a repaired crack on its upper housing. It has no effect on function and the adapter was used throughout testing without issue, but it is disclosed here in full — please see photos.

Cosmetic Condition

• The unit shows general signs of use, with scratches and light wear across the chassis and front panel — see photos for the full picture.
• No unusual odors.
