Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a unique Shure Brother's 420 "Commando" model microphone manufactured during the 1960's when America was knee deep in Vietnam. The aggressive mic was supposed to be excellent at withstanding conditions that were not generally ideal for the average microphone of that era such as heat and humidity. This rugged mic was a great as a general purposes microphone and happens to make an outstanding harp mic today. Mic comes with the mic lavalier necklace / clip, short built in cable and original box shown.

Pic # 2 is from an old 1968 catalog showing this mics basic specs and price. The similar 430 model came with the push to talk / on off button as where the 420 did not. This 400 series mic came in a  few different variations depending on the users needs.

The 400 series utilized the controlled magnetic element. It was a smaller version of the common Shure 99H86 type element. It has a dirty, muddier tone that sounds fantastic with a harmonica and the output is 100%. These mics are omni-directional in nature so they tend to pick up a but more background noise. The smaller size of the 420 makes it ideal for such work.

The mic is extremely lite weight and easy to cup in the hand. The output increases significantly when cupped in the hand as well. You can use this for any HAM radio set up or for recording purposes as well.

Physically speaking this mic is very nice having a beautiful satin chrome front grill and the lower green plastic cartridge has just a few lite scratches and scuff marks. The Shure logo looks very nice as well and completely legible. The front screen is free of any dents, odors or tarnish. There is a short 7 inch attached cable that is soft, pliable and has the male Switchcraft male XLR end connector. Simply attach any longer standard XLR cable as an extension to your audio equipment and you're in business.

 I'd rate the mic a true 8 on a scale of 1 - 10.

There is an original lavalier necklace that works great for this mic having a firm grip on the mic as it hangs around your neck and it has a great working chain. You can slide the mic into a Shure A-25 model mic clip as well if needed.

The original box does show typical wear but it's a great accessory for resale value and a good place to store the mic when not in use.

As with all my vintage microphones...
