TASCAM Porta 03 Ministudio Multitrack 4-Track Cassette Recorder

Overview

This TASCAM Porta 03 has been serviced, cleaned, calibrated, and tested, and is ready for use.

Recording and playback have been tested on all four tracks, and all core functions operate properly. A demonstration video is included with the listing showing recording and playback on all four tracks, along with the pitch modification in operation.

As with any analog cassette multitrack recorder, variations in frequency response and noise between tracks are normal.

The unit is in great cosmetic condition with normal signs of use.

Tape Out Modification

This recorder has been modified with individual tape out RCA jacks.

Normally, the Porta 03 only has L & R line outputs for audio, along with a headphone output. These outputs combine the four tape tracks into a stereo L/R signal through the internal mixer. With this modification, each of the four tape tracks has its own dedicated RCA output. These tape outputs are pre mixer, providing the raw individual audio signal directly from each track on the tape.

This allows you to connect each track separately to an audio interface, mixer, or DAW for individual recording, editing, and mixing.

If you tried to transfer the four tracks individually using the normal L/R line outputs, you would have to record the tracks in separate passes. Because cassette playback speed naturally drifts and fluctuates slightly over time, each pass can end up at a slightly different speed, causing the tracks to gradually fall out of sync with one another. With the individual tape outputs, all four tracks can be captured simultaneously in a single pass, keeping them perfectly synchronized to the same tape playback.

This modification also lets you monitor the recording signal being passed to the tape without the pan and indiviudual volume controls being used. This allows you to know exactly at what volume the recording on the tape will be, normally this isn't possible.

Pitch Modification

This recorder has been modified with an adjustable pitch knob.

Adjusting the pitch knob will allow you to slow down the recording and playback speed of the cassette. The pitch knob can be adjust so low that the motor stops moving. The knob is pretty sensitive but can produce some interesting results when messed with.

Service Performed

Each recorder is completely disassembled, serviced, reassembled, calibrated, and tested before being listed for sale.

Mechanical Service:

• Complete disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly
• Replaced all belts with factory equivalents
• Treated pinch roller with rubber rejuvenator
• Oiled the capstan bearing for lower wow and flutter
• Oiled the motor bearing for a quieter motor and optimal performance
• Replaced missing shell screws
  

Electrical Service:

• Cleaned all switches, potentiometers, and faders
• Cleaned and demagnetized the tape transport for optimal performance
• Reflowed connector solder joints where needed to prevent intermittent connections caused by age and mechanical stress.
• Fixed intermittent input 1
  

Calibration & Modification:

• Calibrated tape speed, playback level, record level, and record bias to ensure accurate recording and playback.
• Installed pitch modification
• Installed individual tape out modification
• Measured wow and flutter at approximately 0.12% RMS (low)
  

Each unit includes a printed service form documenting any issues found, repairs performed, calibrations made, and the testing completed.

Testing

This recorder was tested by recording and playing back an entire side of a cassette tape on all four tracks. This test is performed a minimum of two times, totaling approximately 4–6 hours. During testing, music is recorded in stereo on two tracks at a time, making it easy to compare the recording and playback performance of each track for level, clarity, and consistency. Any issues discovered during testing are corrected before the recorder is listed for sale.
