This is a 2024 Gibson Kirk Hammett “Greeny” Les Paul Standard in Greeny Burst, Gibson’s USA-built tribute to one of the most famous Les Pauls ever made. The original 1959 “Greeny” passed through the hands of Peter Green and Gary Moore before eventually becoming part of Kirk Hammett’s collection, and Gibson built this model around the details that made that guitar so recognizable—particularly its unusual pickup configuration, warm faded burst appearance and unmistakable Les Paul character.
This particular one has an absolutely ridiculous top. It was used as a demo guitar specifically because of the figuring, and it is easy to see why. The AAA figured maple has dense flame running nearly the entire width of the body, with especially strong movement through the lower bout and around both pickups. The Greeny Burst finish has that warm amber/golden center with a softer brown edge, and the satin nitro lets the figuring come through without the glassy, overly polished look of a typical modern Standard. Depending on the angle, different sections of flame seem to appear and disappear. This is easily one of the better Greeny tops I have come across.
Underneath is the traditional Les Paul combination of a mahogany body, figured maple top and mahogany neck, paired with an Indian rosewood fretboard and Gibson’s Custom Greeny neck profile. It feels substantial without being cumbersome, and the setup on this one is particularly good. The action is low and effortless, the frets are excellent, the neck feels great in hand, and intonation is spot on.
The electronics are where the Greeny model really separates itself from a normal Les Paul Standard. It uses Gibson Greenybucker humbuckers, with the neck pickup reverse-mounted and built with reversed magnetic polarity to recreate the signature behavior of the original guitar. In the neck and bridge positions you get big, punchy traditional humbucker tones, but combine the two and you get that distinctive hollow, nasal, out-of-phase character associated with Greeny. It is one of those sounds that immediately stands apart from a normal two-humbucker Les Paul and gives the guitar a completely different personality in the middle position.
The control layout remains the traditional two-volume/two-tone setup, with hand-wired electronics and Orange Drop capacitors. Hardware includes an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, lightweight aluminum stopbar and Grover Rotomatic tuners. The cream pickguard is included but was never installed, leaving the figured maple top completely exposed.
At 9.97 lbs on my scale, this one has some reassuring weight behind it and feels very substantial acoustically. The pickups are especially punchy, and there is plenty of authority behind both the clean and driven sounds. Despite the weight, the low action and comfortable Greeny neck profile make it an effortless guitar to play.
Condition is excellent. The body, neck, backside and fretboard are all extremely clean, and the guitar shows very little actual use. The only item worth specifically mentioning is a small crack in the bridge plastic cream pickup mounting ring. The current ring remains completely functional, but I purchased replacement cream pickup-ring sets and they will be included with the guitar for the next owner. Otherwise, there are no meaningful condition issues to call out.
It includes the original Gibson hardshell case along with the complete original case candy, Certificate of Authenticity, manuals, Gibson accessory kit, polishing cloth, tools and the uninstalled cream pickguard.
