Kingsley Constable V2 Plexi Valve Preamp / Overdrive Pedal.
This version is wired to recreate the preamp section of a late-1960s four-input Marshall Plexi, using two 12AX7 valves running at high voltage. It delivers the response and dynamics of a genuine valve preamp rather than a conventional overdrive pedal.
Designed and hand-wired in Canada by Simon Jarrett of Kingsley Amplifiers. Go to his website to learn more and see demos, or, of course, YouTube's That Pedal Show. He's a fantastic guitarist and amp builder.
It produces excellent Plexi-style clean, edge-of-break-up and driven sounds at manageable volume for rehearsals or at home. See update below from Simon confirming it's a Plexi, not a JCM.
Bought in 2022 from a chap who had waited all that time to get one directly from Simon, then didn't like it. I loved it, but I immediately moved four hours away from my band, so this pedal is practically unused and not needed for my current role on bass.
Blurb:
The V2 retains all the sounds of the original Constable while adding a more versatile feature set, including two footswitchable master volumes and an additional treble-response mode. This allows separate rhythm and lead levels to be set.
It has three output modes:
• Full preamp-level output for connection to a power amp or an amplifier’s effects-loop return
• Attenuated output for use in front of a conventional guitar amplifier or other pedals
• Attenuated output with treble roll-off
It works particularly well at the centre of a pedalboard or amp-less setup as I tried it. Drive, boost and fuzz pedals can be placed in front of it just as they would be with a traditional valve amplifier. It can also be used for recording with a suitable cabinet simulator or impulse response.
I corresponded with Simon about putting it in front of one of his fantastic power stage emulator pedals, or using my Kingsley Page TS, which I am keeping for now.
The correct power supply is included, but they come with Canadian plugs. 12VDC @ 600mA, with a centre positive 2.1mm plug (the opposite of the standard used for Boss pedals).
You can watch the many videos to learn how to use it—or listen.
It will be carefully packed and sent by insured delivery. Since there are valves in it, collection is also welcome in Derbyshire.
Update: Someone kindly suggested this is in a JCM, not a Plexi, because the serial number includes 2203. I have today received an email from Simon:
"Hi Alan
This is a regular Constable plexi made in the 3rd month of 2022. C stands for Constable, 22 stands for the year (2022) and 03 is the month (March).
I have never used the model number of the circuit (which could be 2203 or 2204 as those preamps are the same) in the serial number. The Actual JCM 800 version we make typically starts with "JC". Also the Constable JCM800 has an extra un-labeled pot on the back (presence)., which your Constable does not have."
