We have just received a second unit of this model, which brings the Standard series incredibly close to the Monarch—the very instrument Mr. Wooten first acquired in 1983 and continues to play to this day, even as it shows its age.
The maple top features dense, striking figuring that rivals even the original custom models!
The mahogany back also mirrors the original's specifications, including a chambered (hollow) body design.
It features the standard 3-piece maple bolt-on neck.
It utilizes rosewood for the fretboard—just like the original—a material that has seen rising costs recently.
While the original features a set-neck construction, this bolt-on version arguably emphasizes a sharp, punchy sound that is characteristic of Mr. Wooten's style.
The classic EMG PJ pickup configuration has been positioned with precision—slightly closer to the neck—based on measurements taken from the original instrument.
The preamp also boasts special custom specifications; while it appears to be the standard Fodera x Trickfish unit, it has been tweaked to match the original's setup.
It even includes a mid-frequency selector switch, a feature not found on the standard models.
Upon playing it, you immediately notice the agility typical of the Monarch series, supercharged with the aggressive edge found in the Yin-Yang series.
This is partly due to the strings: it is fitted with the same light-gauge DR .040–.095 strings that Mr. Wooten uses.
While it is possible to switch to standard .045–.105 strings, doing so would require modifications like filing the brass nut—a step that is difficult to reverse—so we highly recommend sticking with the lighter gauge to fully experience the Wooten model's intended character.
The lighter gauge contributes to a lightning-fast response, so you might need to adjust your picking timing at first.
Yet, the moment that refined, elegant tone rings out, it invariably brings a smile to the player's face.
That said, it is by no means limited to just Mr. Wooten's signature sound; it is versatile enough to handle a wide range of styles.
For instance, the neck pickup delivers a warm, P-bass-style tone that anchors rock and blues tracks perfectly. You can roll off the tone for a more subdued sound.
You can get a tight, punchy sound using just the bridge pickup, or really emphasize that definition by boosting the mids.
If you want a bright, "scooped" (heavy bass and treble) sound, simply cut the mid-range frequency to your liking and crank up the treble and bass.
Unlike the "Yin Yang" series, this model features a clean, understated look; it serves perfectly as a standard Monarch—albeit one with a stylish top—for those who prefer not to stand out too much.
Of course, you can always let your fellow bassists in on the secret that it’s actually a "Wooten model."
Just like the original, this instrument is built to be enjoyed for over 40 years to come.
