The Heritage Johnny Smith “The Rose” represents a remarkable chapter in the history of American archtop guitars, combining the design philosophy of legendary jazz guitarist Johnny Smith with the traditional craftsmanship of Heritage Guitars in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Built in 1997, this example features a beautifully figured maple body, solid spruce top, and warm natural finish. The highly figured maple back and sides are particularly striking, with a rich flame that comes alive as the light moves across the surface.

The Rose was developed around Johnny Smith’s vision of a refined and highly responsive jazz instrument. Its name pays tribute to Smith’s mother, while the distinctive rose inlay on the headstock has become one of the model’s defining features.

A floating humbucker mounted to the pickguard provides a warm, focused amplified tone while allowing the carved top to retain much of its natural acoustic response. The ebony fingerboard, mother-of-pearl block inlays, five-piece maple neck, bound body and f-holes further reflect the careful craftsmanship behind the instrument.

With its elegant proportions, striking figured maple, and unmistakable Kalamazoo character, this 1997 Johnny Smith “The Rose” is equally compelling as a refined jazz instrument and as a distinctive piece of American guitar history.
