DESCRIPTION
The Speedster Deluxe, a 25-watt, single-channel tube amp with reverb, features a front-panel bias control and an analog meter that allows you to fine-tune the amp's response to your playing style. The head comes with a matching 1x12 speaker cabinet.

Automotive and musical worlds collide periodically, and the results are such things as the Gibson Corvette and the '57-Chevey-inspired American Showster guitars. The Speedster Deluxe brings this trend into the amp realm with a highly original look that's closer to an open-wheel Bugatti than a tweed Bassman.

The reverb-equipped, single-channel Speedster uses a pair of Russian 6V6 output tubes (fed by a solid-state rectifier) to deliver 25 watts into an 80-watt Eminence 12" speaker. The aluminum front panel resembles a Shelby Cobra dashboard with its circular "damascene" patterning. But instead of speedo, tach, and engine gauges, the Speedster features dual inputs (high and low sensitivity); volume, reverb, and tone controls (treble, middle, bass); a large analog meter that displays output-tube bias voltage in DC millivolts, and a "bias" control. This precision, ten-turn, wire-wound pot allows you to dial in the power amp response to suit your style, and is perhaps the Speedster's most important feature.

The rear panel features dual 16Q speaker jacks and a mini-toggle that selects which output tube's bias voltage is displayed by the meter.

Under the Hood

The Speedster's white-enamel chassis houses a single PC board that grips most of the circuit components, including the sockets for the output tubes and the four Chinese 12AX7s. The neat circuit layout is courtesy of Soldano Amplifiers, who builds and assembles the chassis for Speedster. The pots are all chassis-mounted -- except for the bias control, which is mounted directly to the front panel (along with the bias meter and jeweled pilot light). Directly above the chassis, mounted to a thick aluminum plate, is the full-sized, two-spring Accutronics reverb tank. It interfaces with the amplifier via hefty audio and finished -- automotive style -- in high-gloss polyurethane.

The Speedster Deluxe is a real attention-getter. Its unique styling elicits reactions similar to those of people who encounter the new VW Beetle - they're simply knocked out by this little gem! The fact that the amp also sounds really good quickly dispels any notion that it's an "all show" proposition.
