Bruce amplifiers were rare, highly distinct guitar and bass amplifier systems manufactured in Englewood, Colorado roughly between 1967 and 1972.
Founded and built by a small team that included aerospace electronics engineers from Martin Marietta, they featured an unusual modular design.
Design & Architecture
Split Configuration: The thin, lightweight unit kept on stage was just a two-channel preamp head.
Powered Cabinets: The heavy-duty power amplification modules were integrated directly inside the speaker cabinets.
High-End Speakers: Cabinets were typically loaded with high-efficiency JBL or Altec Lansing 15-inch speakers.
Configurations: Built in various column and cabinet setups (such as 1x15, 2x15, and multi-speaker arrays) capable of extreme volume.
History & Endorsements
Notable Users: They were famously used on tour and in the studio by members of Three Dog Night (including Michael Allsup and Jimmy Greenspoon).
Jimi Hendrix Connection: Jimi Hendrix notably plugged into Michael Allsup's Bruce amplifier during late-night live jams at L.A.'s Whiskey a Go Go in 1968.
Rarity: The company quietly folded in the early 1970s, making surviving functional units rare collector's items today.
Please note: Bottom speaker needs attention. There is a small tear and requires rewiring.
