Greco EG800 - Sunburst, Lawsuit era, 1979

Greco EG800 is a Japanese Single Cut electric guitar, manufactured in 1979 at the FujiGen Gakki factory. The instrument features a mahogany body with a solid maple top and a set-in mahogany neck. It is factory-equipped with a set of two Maxon PU-2 pickups. In our workshop, the guitar underwent an extensive luthier service, including fret replacement with new ones and replacement of the nut.

Body and construction The solid body is made of mahogany and equipped with a solid maple top. The instrument features a Sunburst lacquer finish. A traditional Set-in construction is used, where the neck is glued directly into the body. In our workshop, the lacquer coating on the body was polished and protected with wax.

Neck and ergonomics The mahogany neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard. As part of the service work, the old frets were removed, and brand new Medium Jumbo size frets were installed. The old nut was also removed, replaced with a new, precisely cut element. The fingerboard surface was cleaned and conditioned.

Sound The instrument is equipped with a passive layout of two humbucker pickups (Maxon PU-2) with open coils.

• Characteristics: The use of a massive mahogany body with a maple top and Alnico magnet pickups translates to a frequency response with pronounced mids and a clearly defined, classic bottom end, replicating the 50s and 60s specifications.
• Dynamics: The passive electronic circuit, based on independent volume and tone potentiometers for each pickup, allows for precise mixing of the signal from the coils and responds directly to articulation strength.

Additional information

The EG800 model was produced in the Japanese FujiGen Gakki factory during the so-called Lawsuit era and was a detailed replica of American Single Cut guitars.

The Maxon PU-2 pickups were factory-installed in higher-end models from the Greco catalog in the late 1970s, representing a craftsman's interpretation of classic PAF pickups.

The performed luthier service included: installation of new Medium Jumbo frets, installation of a new nut, body polishing and waxing, fingerboard conditioning, hardware cleaning, and a full setup of intonation.

The lack of metal covers (open coils) on both pickups is an aesthetic and structural feature consistent with the factory specification of this unit.

Hardware

• Bridge: Tune-O-Matic with Stopbar – a steel construction with adjustable saddles, allowing for precise intonation setup.
• Tuners: Greco Deluxe – closed-gear mechanisms. The chrome hardware went through a cleaning process and retains full mechanical efficiency.

Instrument condition

• Technical condition: The instrument is 100% functionally and structurally stable, after verification in our service. The truss rod works smoothly in both directions, and the frets are completely new.
• Visual condition: The front of the instrument is preserved in very good technical and visual condition. On the back of the body, there are clear lacquer dings resulting from strap wear (buckle rash) during use. The guitar has no structural cracks.
• Setup and Modifications: Fret replacement (Medium Jumbo), nut replacement, finish polishing, fingerboard conditioning, and a full setup of string action and scale length were performed.
