Gibson SG Special 2023 Tony Iommi Signature "Monkey" - P-90 Pickups and Pristine condition

Few guitars are as closely connected to the birth of heavy metal as Tony Iommi’s heavily modified 1960s SG Special, universally known as the “Monkey.” Used throughout Black Sabbath’s formative period, the original instrument became inseparable from the dark riffs, menacing atmosphere and unmistakable guitar tone heard on the band’s early records. This Gibson USA Tony Iommi SG Special was created as a direct tribute to that historic guitar, preserving its stripped-down construction, distinctive appearance and uncompromising character.

Finished in Vintage Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer, the guitar features the classic combination of a lightweight mahogany body, a set mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The rounded neck profile feels substantial without becoming cumbersome, while the simple adjustable wraparound bridge keeps the instrument immediate, resonant and exceptionally responsive. Grover Rotomatic tuners, chrome hardware, black Witch Hat knobs and the large multi-ply pickguard complete a design that remains instantly recognizable without becoming an exaggerated replica.

At the heart of the guitar is a pair of chrome-covered Gibson P-90 pickups connected to hand-wired electronics with Orange Drop capacitors. Their sound is raw, open and extremely dynamic, with the cutting upper midrange, dry attack and slightly unruly edge that defined much of Black Sabbath’s earliest material. They retain the clarity and articulation needed for ominous single-note passages, but become thick, aggressive and harmonically rich when pushed into an overdriven amplifier. It is a direct and highly expressive sound that sits much closer to the first Sabbath albums than the compressed response of a modern high-output humbucker.

This Monkey is in perfect condition and still retains the protective film on the pickguard. Comes with OHSC, Monkey sticker and original invoice, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking for an iconic and highly collectible guitar.
