A rare mystery! This snare recently sort of fell into my lap and it’s a bit too out of the wheelhouse for my collection, so I thought I should find it a home with someone more into this era of gear.
It was paired with a 26” Ludwig & Ludwig kick drum with a 1940’s Elkhart Indiana badge, which is of course no guarantee of a match but that’s my first clue.
READ PLEASE: I am not an expert or a drum dealer, just an individual with Google, so I’ll describe what I see and include many photos, but can make no 100% guarantees - this is sold AS IS with no returns, so please reach out with any questions/concerns/clarification first before sending an offer or purchasing.
To my eye, the strainer appears to be an EXACT match to a few listings for other Ludwig P-338 strainers, though there are other designs to the P-338 over the years and some other brands like Slingerland used similar designs.
The tube lugs visually match a lot of old Ludwig drums, though most of the ones I see trend older, like the 20s.
Where things get a little different - the hoops are almost definitely more modern replacements. The older drums with these lugs all seemed to tension up with claw hook style clips, not the flanged pass through style like you see here. The snare wire is also almost definitely newer and not in wonderful shape - works fine, but a little bendy/stringy looking. See pics. You’ll also notice both hoops and snare wire are a lot cleaner/shinier than you’d expect from 1940’s or earlier.
The wood shell is 6.5x14 with reinforcement rings. The interior has a light finish, maybe shellac or similar. The exterior seems to be a thin veneer rather than a more modern wrap, and has been painted black by a prior owner. The paint job isn’t super neat around the bearings but looks pretty good, though it has taken on a good bit of road rash and scuffing (see pics).
Ancient heads top and bottom match the vibe. They tune up fine and can be played as is, though I can tell it could definitely be made to sing with modern heads if you want to.
I don’t exactly know how to price this since I don’t 100% know any of the key details. I could probably part out the hardware but that would be too much a shame, and equally I could probably modernize it more and keep it but that would also feel like a shame. Putting it up here starting at $222 OBO plus shipping to see if it gets any takers. Thanks for looking!
