Martin Guitars have always been an object of admiration, regardless of the era. Still beloved as vintage guitars, Martin guitars have seen the reissue of various models thanks to recent advancements in technology. Among these, the Authentic Series reproduces masterpieces from the golden age that command particularly high value in the vintage market. The Authentic Series is manufactured by a small, elite custom shop team, who meticulously craft each and every guitar, a process that is time-consuming and highly regarded even by Martin fans who are well-versed in vintage guitars. This particular instrument is the "D-18 Authentic 1937," a faithful reproduction based on the "D-18" manufactured in 1937. This is a used item from 2022. This guitar features an Adirondack spruce top, genuine mahogany sides and back, genuine mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, butterbean knob Waverly open-back tuners, Madagascar rosewood veneer, abalone dot fingerboard inlays, painted tortoiseshell pickguard, steel T-bar truss rod, traditional hide glue bonding (a time-consuming boiling process), and a 1937-style forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing top. This is a renewed model with a body shape closer to the original than existing models. The ultimate mahogany sound revived for the modern era. This instrument faithfully follows the construction methods and designs of the golden age, clearly setting it apart from other vintage reissue models. Every detail, from the thickness of the headstock and fingerboard to the back bracing, side panel crack reinforcement, and fingerboard end, is faithfully reproduced. The serial stamp is also designed to look exactly like the original, making this a truly unique and meticulously crafted remake guitar. The mahogany section has a rich, deep color reminiscent of the era, resulting in a beautifully textured finish. It boasts a thick, resonant tone with a solid harmonic richness, yet retains the characteristic airiness of a Style 18, without being overly heavy. The tone is clear and focused, responding well to everything from strumming to arpeggios. There are a few minor dents on the back near the neck heel (paint only), some scuff marks on the headstock side from the winder, and other surface scratches and slight dents visible depending on the lighting. However, these do not affect playability, and the overall aesthetic remains unaffected. The neck has a slight warp, but it's within acceptable limits. The current setup is modern, ensuring good playability and comfort. The body end retains its original hole, just as it was when new. This instrument embodies the passion of its craftsman. A highly recommended mahogany dreadnought model that deserves to be played extensively. A general-purpose hard case is included.
