The Hot Rod Series HTL 2, “Homeage To Leo,” is a work of art. Featuring a stunning two-tone Teal Green with Cream Sides finish, inspired by the sleek designs of 1950s automobiles, this guitar exudes vintage charm while delivering a cutting-edge sound.

The Hot Rod Series HTL 2 is a testament to Chuck Thornton’s years of mastery in guitar craftsmanship. Combining premium tonewoods with expert design, this guitar delivers an unparalleled playing experience. The result is a finely tuned instrument with rich, resonant tones and a flawless finish, inspired by the classic cars of the 1950s. The smooth contours and lightweight build make it an ideal companion for long performances and studio sessions alike. Whether playing smooth jazz, blues, or rock, this guitar responds with clarity and depth.

What Does Josh Think

This guitar boasts a nice, spanky pickup set. But unique to this guitar is a bigger and warmer bottom end than I am used to in a Strat. Some of that might be the pickups, as the Harmonic Design 54s lean into the juicy bottom end of the earliest Strat pickups. But I believe much is due to the Nootka Cedar body. I have never player another guitar of this wood species before, but I am now a believer!   The bottom end is warm and powerful. The midrange is clear and transparent, and the top is nice and snappy without being harsh. The second tone knob is actually a blend knob that allows you to mix in the bridge pickup when in neck position, and vice versa. This gives you the ability to run just the outer pickups for a tone akin to the middle position on a Tele. Or you can choose a more subtle blend that mixes the opposite pickup to taste. Or roll with position 2 or 4 and blend in the extra pickup to have all three pickups running together!

How Does It Play

CP Thornton’s C shape is a very comfortable and classic neck profile. It’s on the beefy side but with rounded shoulders so excellent playability remains intact! I love it for how easy it is to grab chords, as well as play single note lines with finesse. The string action sits at just over 4/64” on the low E string and right at 4/64” on the high E string, measured at the 12th fret.
