Follows description from Equipboard:

The 1979 Maxon D&S II (Distortion & Sustainer II) is a vintage analog overdrive/distortion pedal manufactured in Japan by Nisshin Onpa. Unlike its predecessor, the D&S (which was a Big Muff clone), the D&S II features a unique circuit often described as a hybrid between a Tube Screamer and an MXR Distortion+.

Key Technical Specifications (1979 Model)

  • Circuit Design: Uses a dual op-amp design with germanium clipping diodes (distinct from earlier silicon versions), providing a warmer, more natural "tube-like" response.
  • Controls:
    • Distortion: Adjusts the amount of gain/saturation.
    • Tone: Controls the frequency response.
    • Balance: Functions as a volume/level control.
  • Chassis: Housed in a small, narrow die-cast aluminum case.
  • Power: Typically runs on a 9V battery or a 9V DC power adapter (note: 1979 models often featured the "narrow" box style with an LED and power jack).

Sonic Characteristics

  • Hybrid Tone: It sits between a standard overdrive and a fuzzy distortion, offering more low-end heft and "grunt" than a typical Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer.
  • Compression & Sustain: Known for its "silky" sustain and gritty breakup, mimicking a low-wattage vintage amp being pushed to its limits.
  • Transparency: Unlike the "mid-hump" associated with later overdrives, it is praised for retaining the original character of the guitar and amp.

Historical Context

  • Maxon was the original OEM manufacturer for Ibanez. The D&S II (model OD-802) was a precursor to the famous 80-series pedals and is highly sought after by collectors for its specific 1970s analog "mojo".
