The Ace Tone FM series began with this. The FM-1 transforms that gated feel into a charming instrument!

The FM-1 boasts a completely different chassis from the subsequent FM-2 and FM-3, and is powered by two AA batteries, much like the Maestro FZ-1A. The only controls are a "VOLUME" that doubles as a power switch and a "FUZZ ADJ." that adjusts distortion. There's no tone selector switch; only a bypass footswitch. Even at minimum "FUZZ ADJ.", distortion is comparable to a regular overdrive, and turning it up increases distortion and the harmonics/gate feel. Around 12 o'clock, the gated feel is just right, and beyond that, the sound develops into a pulsating one. While the sound may sound a little muffled when playing chords, it makes up for it with a powerful, bold sound that really makes a statement. This is a truly outstanding piece, boasting a superb sound and truly worthy of being called a masterpiece of Japanese fuzz!
